SHOCKER- Arsenal MEGA Star Refuses To Extend Deal With Club

Goonersden brings you news from top football news sites from the likes of ESPN, SkySport, Daily Mail, Daily Star and Metro… We also Analyse football, player, transfer and predict Arsenal starting line-up.

Club captain Per Mertesacker has refused to confirm whether he will sign a new deal or not if offered one, according to a report in Football Insider.

The veteran defender is the final year of his contract and is yet to begin talks on a new deal. He suffered a serious knee injury during the preseason which will sideline until next year and that has somehow affected his future.

Wenger recently stated he would wait until the defender returns from injury to prove his fitness before offering him a new deal.

When asked by 101 Great goals if he would sign a new deal, the defender refused to commit his long term future to our club.

He said: “I don’t know yet. My first priority is to get back to full fitness which will still take a while. So let’s see”.

Probably the centre back knows he faces a battle to regain his first team spot when he returns from injury as Koscielny and Mustafi are already building a solid relationship at the back in his absence.

Rob Holding has also showed he can be a great player for us while Gabriel Paulista could also be ahead of the defender when he returns from injury.

With all these players competing with him for a spot in Wenger’s starting xi, it is understandable if he is carefully considering his future.

Mertesacker can begin talks with other clubs as from January but we believe he would wait to know Wenger’s plans for him before making a decision on his future.

The German has featured 207 times for us since he joined in 2011 and was handed the captain armband after the departure of Mikel Arteta in the summer. His exit will be a big blow for us but as we all know he would have to leave us someday. Whatever decision he takes, we wish him all the best.
