Goonersden brings you news from top football news sites from the likes of ESPN, SkySport, Daily Mail, Daily Star and Metro… We also Analyse football, player, transfer and predict Arsenal starting line-up.

Alex Iwobi believes his best friend Chuba Akpom could be the next academy player to break into the first team.

Iwobi was promoted to the first team at the beginning of last season and immediately made an impact. He has become a regular since then and has now tipped his best friend Akpom to follow his path by breaking into the first team this season.

Akpom spent last season on loan at Hull City and on his return, he was included in the first-team squad in the summer. His stay was aided by Wenger’s difficulty to sign a striker in the summer transfer window. However, we completed the signing of Lucas Perez in the final days of the transfer window and the Spaniard’s arrival meant Akpom was pushed further down the pecking order. Iwobi has now backed him to make a breakthrough and make an impact in the first team this season.

“I don’t really know who to expect, because you never know who will come through.

“But I’d say Chuba Akpom will be the next to join.

“He and Glen Kamara are probably my best friends at the club.

“I’ve known Chuba since I was about three years old – I used to play Sunday League with him for Rippleway in Newham, and now we’re still at Arsenal together.

“Glen came at under-16s and he’s just a joker of the team – I’m really close with him.”

Akpom has played just ten times in an Arsenal shirt in his career and he will be desperate to prove himself when given the opportunity.

It’s always a good thing when an academy player makes his way into the first team and we will be rooting for Akpom over here but we know it’s not going to be easy as he will have to compete with Alexis Sanchez, Olivier Ground and Lucas Perez on his way to the top.
