Monaco Full back Djibril Sidibe has revealed how close he was to becoming a Gunner in the summer transfer window.
We were heavily linked with a move for the 24-year-old in the summer but missed out when he opted to sign for Monaco instead.
Sidibe primarily plays as a right back but played as a Left back last term for Lille and he was Wenger’s choice to strengthen the defense line in the summer.
However, the player completed a move to Monaco and has now suggested we made our move too late as he had no time to think about our offer thoroughly. He also feared he would not have gotten as much game time as he would have wanted had he made the switch to the Emirates.
He told French newspaper Le Parisien : “I was really close to signing [for Arsenal], and I had a headache given how late they came in for me.
“Normally, you jump at the chance, but after thinking about it, I wasn’t certain that I would get playing time. I would have played perhaps 25 games with the cups.
“And they saw me playing rather on the left while I want to establish myself on the right. So, I preferred to stay in Ligue 1 to get a maximum of experience and leave for the Premier League next year, because it’s a league that I’m really attracted to.”
Sidibe is looking to establish himself as a right back this season and then make a move to a bigger club. With doubts surrounding the future of Hector Bellerin, it would be a good idea to keep a close eye on his performances at Monaco. Bellerin is believed to be attracting the interest of Manchester City and reports claim he is open to the idea of moving to the Etihad, Sidibe could come in as a good replacement for the Spaniard if he proves himself as a world class defender this year.
