Arsenal tried to sign Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic in the summer transfer window, reports have revealed.

Signing a striker was one of our priorities in the summer transfer window and we were linked with a number of targets. Reports linking us with the likes Alexandre Lacazette, Gonzalo Higuain and Jamie Vardy were all over the press but it has now emerged that there was another player we were interested in signing.

According to Corriere Dello sport via Sports Witness, we were the first club that enquired about Mandzukic’s availability in the summer.

The report is a bit surprising as Wenger claimed in the summer that he was in search of a world class striker who would take the club to the next level and Mandzukic was never that kind of player.

The Croatian managed to score 13 goals in 36 appearances last season and is even in line to finish poorer than last season as he is yet to score a goal in seven league games this term.

Being the first to enquire about the Croatian makes me wonder if he was top of our wish list and if he was the world class striker Wenger was targeting.

However, we finally settled for Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna which to me is a better option as he didn’t come with a big name tag that Mandzukic would have arrived with.

It is situations like this that has made Wenger fall on the wrong side of some supporters by signing players below everyone’s expectation. Thankfully, the move for Mandzukic didn’t happen for whatever reason but he is another one to add to the list of strikers we allegedly tried to sign.
