Arsene Wenger has admitted his surprise at how important  Shkodran Mustafi has become to the team just few weeks after joining us from Valencia.

The midfielder started his fourth consecutive league game for Arsenal against Swansea City on Saturday and in this short time he has won plaudits for his performances.

The midfielder has built a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny at the heart of our defense, he has also shown his leadership qualities on the pitch and Wenger has revealed he is shocked at the German’s quick adaptation.

“That’s quite a surprise that he’s a character as well at such a young age,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.

“Maybe being mature helps as well. The fact that he has been out for a long time in different countries at a very young age certainly has helped him grow in confidence quicker.

“He has good communication and good individual qualities as well. He’s also got strong commitment, is good in the challenge, good in the fight and you need those qualities in England because you’re tested very quickly.

“In the first two or three games they isolated him and tried to test him, so you have to be able to give an answer to show that you’re ready for the fight. That’s certainly an important part in his success.”

When one thinks of how long it took us to complete a deal to sign the German, we can only but thank our stars that he is with us. He has proven to be exactly what we needed and what we have lacked all these years.

It’s still early days and the defender can still improve. At 24, he still has his best years ahead of him and should he maintain this early standard, he would be a big player for us in the future.
