Arsene Wenger is confident that Mesut Ozil will sign a new deal with us but admitted we will have to break the bank for the midfielder.

The German has been in talks with the club over a new deal since May and there are some worrying reports from some quarters that we might not be able to agree a new deal with the midfielder.

Numerous reports have claimed the midfielder wants a new deal worth more than £200,000 a week and also wants us to show we have the ambition to win titles.

Wenger has somehow admitted those reports are true but has calmed fans fear by claiming the midfielder is happy in North London.

Wenger said, as reported Squawka: “I don’t think he needs convincing. He wants to stay here. But if you have a good bank, call me. It’s not just money.

“Arsenal can win titles of course. But that’s what we have to show. We are in a league where Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea: everybody fights and you cannot guarantee that to anybody.

“We keep that [negotiations] discreet. In due time we will come out with that. We want to keep our best players, of course. But the more I say that, the more he is in a stronger position!”

Ozil has been influential since joining us in 2013, he had the most assists (19) in the league last season and has also started this season in fine form, although he is yet to claim an assist this term, he has already scored three league goals. Signing the midfielder on a new contract is imperative and even if that means breaking the bank, we just have to do that. The playmaker has suggested in the past that he is more concerned about winning trophies and our fine form this campaign should also convince him that we have the quality to challenge for titles.
