Santi Cazorla has revealed he is not in a hurry to sign a new contract at Arsenal despite his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
The Spaniard has become an integral part of our squad since he joined us in 2011 and has consistently proven to be one of our best players over the years but surprisingly his long-term future is in doubt.
Despite his contract expiring next summer, talks over an extension haven’t started. One would not have expected it to get to this stage but for unknown reasons, it has gotten to the stage where we could lose the midfielder if we don’t act now.
The player who recently revealed he is happy at the Emirates and wants to stay with us now claims he is in no rush to extend his stay. Carzola says he is not thinking about a contract renewal but wants to focus on his performance on the pitch.
‘In my case I will finish my contract at the end of the season but I’m not thinking about it now,’ he told IBTimes, as quoted by The Metro. ‘I’m just focusing on playing and giving my best on the pitch.
“Last season was very difficult for me after spending so much time on the sidelines. Now I just want to enjoy myself again – and we’ll see what happens in the future.’
He added: ‘I’m happy because I’m playing regularly. If I didn’t play I would tell you that I would consider leaving, but I’m having minutes and I have the confidence of the manager. That’s what every player wants.’
Carzola had one of his worse seasons with us last year – not in terms of performance but injury. The Spaniard was on the sidelines for majority of last season and that could be the reason we have delayed offering him a new deal.
Most times, a club needs to pay special attention to the fitness level of players who are above 30 years of age. it’s sometimes difficult for them to get back to their best after suffering a serious injury and it would not be surprising if Wenger was waiting for Carzola to prove his fitness first before talking about his future. Should that be the case, the midfielder has done well and has shown that he deserves a new deal.
