Club captain Per Mertesacker has hailed in-form winger Theo Walcott again, following his impressive start to the season.
Walcott has been in fine form since the beginning of the campaign notching five league goals already. The England international was one of the numerous players heavily linked with a move away in the summer transfer window and Wenger’s decision to keep him didn’t go down well with many supporters.
The winger’s critics have been stunned by his current form and while many are still wondering what has changed in the former Southampton man, Mertesacker believes it’s a change in his mentality.
The club captain believes Walcott’s fine form is down to the winger adopting a different approach mentally. Walcott used to drift in and out of games in the past which could be attributed to his mental weakness. A perfect example was when he missed a clear chance in the early minutes of the Manchester United game last year and things began to get worse for him from that moment.
Mertesacker believes Walcott now knows how to deal with disappointment and that’s the source of his confidence which has improved his game.
The defender said: “I made clear in a recent notes that I see a different intensity when I watch him now.
“Even when he misses a chance, he doesn’t hesitate.
He doesn’t jog back, he runs back to get into his position again.
“He looks full of energy but he also thinks about what he needs to do next.
“He thinks ‘where can I contribute the most?’ and he knows it’s with his intensity and pace.”
Walcott’s form has given joy to as many fans who retained faith in him all these years. Our longest serving player has now begun to perform the duties that are expected of him and everyone associated with the club will be hoping he continues like this for a long time.
