Arsene Wenger has revealed that the club is still in talks with Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over a contract extension.
The duo have been in talks with the club since May but no significant progress have been made as regards securing their future.
Previous reports had claimed the players are demanding a new salary package worth £250,000 a week but Goal claimed few days ago that Ozil’s concern is not money related but about Wenger whose contract expires at the end of the current season. The report claims Ozil wants the boss to commit his future to the club before he will sign a contract extension.
But stating his opinion in his pre match press conference before the game against Middlesbrough, Wenger said that he is certain the duo will sign a new contract.
“We are always in touch and that’s our desire. Mesut Ozil is 28 years old, in the prime of his career and of course we want him to contribute to the success of this club in the future,” said Wenger, as reported on the club’s website.
Wenger also said he doesn’t think the duo will leave the club if he doesn’t sign an extension: “No, I don’t say that,” he added.
“They are happy at the club and I want them to commit to the club because they believe they are in the right place.”
Other clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the duo and should they continue to put on excellent displays, the interest from other clubs will get stronger but a new contract at Arsenal will put an end to any fear of them leaving.
We are quite confident that they will sign a new deal and it’s only going to be a matter of time.
