Arsene Wenger has backed Lucas Perez to play an important role for Arsenal in the future.

The striker completed a £17m move from Deportivo La Coruna in the final days of the summer transfer window but things hasn’t gone as planned for the striker.

He was signed alongside Shkodran Mustafi on the penultimate day of the transfer window and while the defender has established himself has a main stay in our starting xi already, Perez has started just one Premier League game for us which was against Southampton last month.

The striker recently revealed Wenger had told him to be patient that his time will come, which he claimed he is willing to do. The boss has now publicly given him a vote of confidence, backing him to go on to become a great player for us.

“I believe he has the potential to be a great player for us,” Wenger said.

“In training he continues to show he has the potential to play, he now has to transfer that into the games and the more he does that.

“Against Reading he has an opportunity – the more we will be tempted to say, ‘let’s do it’.

“I think he did extremely well against Ludogorets because he came on and gave two great goals and was a bit like the rest of the team against Middlesbrough, in that he could not have as big an impact because the whole team was not functioning as well.”

Despite Perez’ relative lack of game time, he has shown his quality in the few games he has played. His path to the first team has been blocked by the superb form of Alexis Sanchez and he would have to be patient for his opportunity. We are hoping the striker will prove Wenger right when he eventually gets his chance.
