Arsene Wenger has backed Alex Iwobi to replace Mesut Ozil in the future.
Iwobi broke into the first team last season and had to settle for a spot on the wings despite not being a traditional winger. The Nigeria international who took many by surprise last season has grown to become an important member of our squad. He was usually deployed on the right wing last year but this term he has claimed the left wing spot but Wenger sees the youngsters long term future in the central playmaking role which is currently occupied by Mesut Ozil.
Iwobi was given the chance to play centrally in the EFL cup game against Reading on Tuesday night and his performances against the Royal shows he could even be more effective playing just behind the striker.
Ozil is currently Wenger’s first choice in that position but the boss has backed Iwobi to do a great job there.
“You see, he is not a typical winger and I think he can play in that [No 10] role,” Wenger said.
“He turns the game forward, he passes the ball through the lines very well. He has a final ball in him. He is now a little bit, I think he has it all in the locker to pass and give the final ball.
“What you want from him now is the finishing, you know. That’s still a little part that is missing in his game. I think he is too nervous at the moment when he has the possibility to finish.”
Since making his first-team debut in October last year, Iwobi has grown from strength to strength. His quality has proven to be rare among his peers and should he continue to improve and add versatility to his game, then he would become a terrific player for us in the future which is what every Gooner wants.
