Arsenal lost out to Manchester United in the race to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer, according to a report in Football365.
The Armenia international who joined Manchester United in August after an impressive season with Borussia Dortmund was heavily linked with Arsenal prior to his move to Old Trafford.
The links to Arsenal died down immediately Manchester United’s interest in signing him was made public and the Daily Mail has now revealed that Jose Mourinho’s men gazumped us in the race to sign the playmaker.
The report claims we were the ones initially interested in the playmaker and had agreed a move with BVB but Man Utd joined the race late and moved ahead when they offered to pay £7m more than we were prepared to pay.
Football Journalist Chris Wheeler made these claims exclusively, he wrote:
‘Mkhitaryan was one of the most highly-regarded midfielders in Europe.”
‘The man voted player of the year in Germany last season on the back of 23 goals and 20 assists in 51 games for Dortmund.
‘A move to Arsenal was agreed in the summer but United gazumped their rivals by up to £7m to sign him.
‘Ironically, the 27-year-old player thought United’s need for him was greater and he would play more at Old Trafford. He could be forgiven for regretting that decision now.’
Wheeler’s claims about Arsenal having a deal in place to sign Mkhitaryan might be 100% true as the midfielder was pictured house hunting in North London in the summer.
He wouldn’t be house hunting if it wasn’t a done deal or close to being a done deal. The report at that time got many Gooners into celebration and I was disappointed when he decided to sign for our rival.
Now that it has been revealed that money was crucial in his decision then i’m happy he didn’t join us. The Emirates is for players who love our jersey and not those after money. I’m sure the midfielder will be wishing he had made a different decision considering his current situation at Old Trafford.
