Petr Cech has backed summer signing Granit Xhaka to lead us to the Premier League title this year.
Xhaka completed a big money deal to the Emirates in the summer transfer window after proving to be one of Bundesliga’s best midfielders in the last couple of seasons.
Following his arrival, he was expected to add quality to our squad that finished second last season and take us a step further to winning the title.
But Cech believes Xhaka isn’t just all about his quality but also has the mentality to challenge for titles. Our goalkeeper believes the summer signing has the mentality to cope with the pressure of winning titles which is something one can say we have lacked in the squad all these years.
‘Arsenal always compete to win the title but it has been a long time since they achieved that,’ Cech said, as quoted by The Metro.
‘Now everyone is talking about when we will end that run — and I do think there has been a major change at Arsenal over the last three years.
‘Prior to that, the club had to sell their best players because of paying for the stadium and keeping the financial situation as they wanted. It wasn’t always easy for the manager to strengthen and have the right players.
‘But now we can see that the stadium is done and the club has money to spend.
‘We bought Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Xhaka. All big international players, who are ready for the expectations and know how to deal with them.’
What else should be expected of a £35m signing if not to help us win titles. Although Xhaka hasn’t been entirely convincing, he has shown that he has the quality to become a key player for us.
The whole squad appears to have been lifted by his arrival and that of Mustafi. They have strengthened us considerably, in turn making us one of the favorites for the league title.
We have always been up there challenging for title in the last few years but usually crack when the pressure is on and hopefully our summer signings will help us go through the tough part of this season unscathed.
