Arsene Wenger has hailed Olivier Giroud’s mentality after the striker made an immediate impact coming off the bench against Sunderland to help us secure a big win on Saturday.
The striker scored two clinical goals to help us defeat the black cats 4-1. It was his first and second goals of the season which came from his first two touches of the game.
The Frenchman has been used sparingly this season due to injury and to some extent the effectiveness of Alexis Sanchez in the centre-forward role, it was only fair for the boss to praise him after the game.
One can say Giroud is equally loved and loathed amongst the club supporters with his quality having be questioned by supporters on several occasions but he has kept going and has always come out strong. Wenger has now hailed his mental strength that helps him through those difficult situations.
“Olivier is a guy who is mentally absolutely fantastic,” Wenger said after the game.
“He’s strong and every time he’s questioned, he gives you the right answer on the pitch. I admire that in him.
“He’s a guy who has gone through some different questions. Even before the European Championship in France, he was questioned by the crowd and in the end everybody was on his side.”
The European Championships was a perfect example of Giroud’s mental strength. Despite the criticism he received from his country’s fans in the build-up to the competition, he was still one of their best players in the tournament.
He will need that same mental strength to compete with Alexis Sanchez for the centre-forward position at the Emirates this season and his performance against Sunderland has placed him on the right track.
