Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry believes Olivier Giroud can lead us to the league title this season.
Giroud has proven to be a decent striker for Arsenal since he joined in 2012 but he hasn’t shown that he has the quality to lead us to the Premier League title.
However, the striker is in fine form, having come back from an impressive Euro 2016 with the France national team. Despite suffering an injury setback, he has come back stronger, banging two goals against Sunderland on Saturday.
The win against Sunderland made Arsenal joint leaders of the Premier League with Manchester City and Liverpool which has given many Gooners a ray of hope that we can win the league title this season.
And Henry has backed Giroud to play a key role for Arsenal in the race to win the title albeit from the bench.
The French striker is battling to reclaim his first team spot but the form of Alexis Sanchez is making his task tougher and Henry believes Giroud can be a perfect plan B for us.
“Yes he can be a plan B but I don’t know if he’s going to be happy coming off the bench but I think you win a title like that.” Henry told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Mirror. “[Manchester] United had [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer and [Teddy] Sheringham, [Edin] Dzeko for [Manchester] City, we had Sylvain Wiltord so can he accept to do that?
“We know the boss, Arsene Wenger, now likes to play with Alexis Sanchez inside and he came on and did the job and he did it very well. He (Giroud) is amazing in the air and that gives you another option. If you can have Sanchez in the middle and him coming off the bench or sometimes maybe you start him and Sanchez goes back outside or Sanchez goes around him but that’s more difficult because you’re playing Mesut Ozil. I think you have a different option but that’s great for the boss.”
Giroud might not accept the role of a super sub but should Sanchez continue to impress, he would have to accept making an impact from the bench.
Next up for Arsenal is the North London derby this weekend and we are hoping Giroud plays a key role again.
