Arsenal have joined the race to sign Rangers youngster Billy Gilmour, according to the Mirror.
Gilmour, 15, is regarded as one of the most promising youngsters in Scotland and he has caught the attention of a host of Premier League clubs.
Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and now Arsenal are all believed to be keeping tabs on the youngster after they were left impressed by his performances in this year’s Victory Shield tournament. Though the competition isn’t over, the Premier League clubs are already scrambling for his signature with the hope of luring him away from Rangers.
However, the Scottish giants are not prepared to lose their prized asset without a fight and the club boss Mark Warburton recently revealed they are determined to keep hold of the youngster.
‘Billy Gilmour is a product of the academy, and the academy work so, so hard. I was at the Hall of Fame dinner and I heard Hugh McIlvanney speak about the need to produce two, three or four outstanding young talents. I think Billy Gilmour could well be one of those such talents’, Warburton said.
Arsenal’s interest in the youngster shouldn’t be surprising as we are known for signing talented young players and helping them become great first team players. Hector Bellerin and Cesc Fabregas are prime examples of players that joined us at a tender age and then developed into great footballers at the club.
It will be interesting to see how the race to sign Gilmour unfolds but it won’t be an easy one due to the level of competition and the fee that might be involved in signing him. A fee of about £3m is already being quoted by the media and whether we would be willing to pay that much for a 15 year old is something we will have to wait to find out.
