Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports.

The Uruguay international has developed into one of La Liga’s top centre-backs in recent seasons and Arsene Wenger is believed to be a huge admirer of the defender.

Arsenal apparently tried to sign Gimenez in the last transfer window but Atletico Madrid were not willing to sell which forced us to concentrate on bringing Mustafi to the Emirates and if recent reports are to be believed, Arsenal have not dropped it’s interest in the Uruguayan.

According to The Sun via the Daily Star, Arsene Wenger wants the 21-year-old defender to strengthen his defense line next summer.

Wenger still wants to strengthen the defense next summer, despite signing Mustafi in August. Per Mertesacker is approaching the end of his career, Gabriel Paulista has also failed to impress since he joined us in January 2015 and the manager believes Gimenez will be an upgrade to any of the duo.

The report also added that the defender is keen on a move to the Emirates, meaning we just need to firm up our interest.

However, he is not expected to come cheap, Atletico Madrid are not willing to lose the defender and they would insist his £54m release clause is activated, should they be forced to sell.

Reports suggest, Manchester United are keen on the defender, ready to pay the clause but his preference to join us should give us an edge over the Old Trafford club.

Gimenez is a top talent and has the potential to become one of the best in the world. He would definitely be a massive addition to our squad should we successfully lure him to North London.
