Arsenal have joined the race to sign Netherlands defender Stefan de Vrij, according to reports in Italy.
Wenger is reportedly in search of a defender as he plans for the possible departure of club captain Per Mertesacker. The German defender’s contract expires at the end of the season and talks over a new deal has yet to commenced. While he is keen to extend his stay at the Emirates, we are not sure if Arsenal wants to. AS Roma’s Kostas Manolas has be linked as a potential replacement for the German but Roma are hoping to tie their defender down to a new contract.
According to Talksport, De Vrij is now on the Gunners radar ahead of a summer move. The reports claim we have been alerted by the defender’s contractual situation at Lazio.
Chelsea were interested in signing the defender last transfer window but were knocked back by the Italian club. They now want to extend the Dutch man’s contract which expires in 2018 and include a hefty release clause but he is stalling on signing the proposed deal.
Arsenal will continue to monitor his situation and could make a move for him next summer if he doesn’t sign the new deal before then.
Lazio might be forced to sell at a reduced price because the player will have just one year left in his contract unless he signs a new deal before then.
Although I doubt Wenger would step up his interest in the Dutch international considering he has more than enough centre back options available to him.
