Arsenal are trailing behind Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica winger Goncalo Guedes, according to a report in the Daily Cannon.

The winger who is rated as one of Portugal’s most promising youngsters has been linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal for quite sometime.

Arsenal have been scouting the winger for more than one year and it is believed that Wenger is a big fan of the player who is already drawing comparisons to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was first reported that Arsenal were in a strong position as regards signing the winger but Portuguese newspaper A’bola are now claiming Manchester United have overtaken us in the race to sign the coveted winger.

This news wouldn’t go down too well with Arsenal fans who are fed up of seeing the club lose out on talented players to its rivals but as we all know, we can’t sign every player being watched by the club.

It could be that we cooled our interest because of Benfica’s demands, the winger is reportedly worth £51m to Benfica and it is unlikely that Wenger would want to pay such for a player who is still learning his trade.

Manchester United have spent huge sums of money on youngsters who are currently under performing with Martial being a prime example, so it is not surprising that they are now leading the race to sign Guedes as they typically spend such huge amount of cash on teenagers.

Guedes has scored just twice in 14 appearances this season which shows he is not in any way worth the huge price tag, although he could be in a few years time if he continues to improve.
