Arsene Wenger has challenged Mesut Ozil to commit his long-term future to Arsenal if he wants to be seen as an Arsenal legend.
Ozil who is in fine form this season has elevated himself to the position where he is regarded as the most influential player in the team but Wenger is backing him to go a step further and cement his name amongst the club’s all time greats.
However, Wenger believes Ozil will only achieve a legend status if he stays at the club for a long time.
Ozil’s long term future is still unresolved as the midfielder is yet to sign a contract extension with us despite already into the penultimate year of his contract.
Negotiations over a new deal have been ongoing since May but an agreement is not even close and Wenger has urged him to put pen to paper if he wants to attain the status of a club great like Dennis Bergkamp.
“I think so, I think if he commits. Dennis Bergkamp committed for a long period, played until he was 38,” Wenger replied when asked if Ozil can become a club legend.
“I wish we have 10 more years of Ozil. That depends. To become a legend at the club you need to stay for a long time.
“I understand that being a legend like Dennis Bergkamp, if you stay two years you would not be a legend.”
Wenger also confirmed that talks are ongoing with Ozil as regards a new deal but didn’t confirm if there was any progress or not.
“We are working on it,” he added.
Gooners will be keen for the midfielder to stay at the club for a long time especially with his current form. The German international has become more important to the team this season and he could cement his place in our hearts by maintaining this level of performance and helping us win the league title this year.
