Reports in Spain are claiming Barcelona were never interested in signing Hector Bellerin, after it has emerged that the defender will be signing a new six year deal at the Emirates.
Reports linking the defender with a move to the Camp Nou has been rife since last summer and it was heavily reported that the Spanish club were preparing to make a move for him next summer.
Arsenal then moved quickly to tie the defender down on a new contract and he is now set to sign a new six year deal, which will put an end to Barcelona’s interest.
Spanish Publication Mundo Deportivo via the Daily Star has now revealed Barcelona were never interested in the defender.
The report suggests that Bellerin was only using Barcelona to get Arsenal to offer him more money.
Although, Arsenal fans wouldn’t pay attention to Mundo Deportivo’s claims due to the excitement that the club has secured the future of its prized asset for another six years, I would like to point out some reasons why I think the Spanish club were actually interested in the defender.
A Spanish publication Sport last week claimed a well placed source at Arsenal had informed Barcelona that Bellerin would be signing a new deal at Arsenal. If the Spanish club weren’t interested in defender, why did they establish a “contact” to update them about the defender’s situation.
Also Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre publicly claimed that Bellerin carries a Barcelona DNA and talked up the possibility of a future move. Why would a well respected club chief say such if there was no interest?
This just goes on to further strengthen my opinion that Mundo Deportivo is a bias media outlet that likes to favor Barcelona. Well who cares? Bellerin has signed a new deal with us and it’s worth celebrating.
