Former Arsenal striker Paul Mariner doesn’t think Olivier Giroud has the quality to help us win the Premier League title.
Giroud who lost his place in the starting xi to Alexis Sanchez at the beginning of the season has revealed that he isn’t going to rest until he forces his way back into the first team.
The French striker vowed to work hard and do his best to reclaim his spot from the Chilean and while many have praised his never-say-die attitude, Marriner reckons the striker doesn’t have what it takes to lead us to the Premier League title as a first team regular.
But the former striker says Wenger cannot afford to let Giroud leave the Emirates in January with Serie A giants Napoli and AC Milan circling around the French man.
“Giroud is not the man to take Arsenal to the Premier League title,” the ex-Highbury hitman told ESPN, as quoted by The Daily Star.
“Alexis Sanchez when he’s been playing in that role – we can see what he’s been doing – he is absolutely terrific. But I can’t see Arsenal selling Giroud with so little cover.
“He’s [Arsene Wenger] not going to play [Theo] Walcott or [Alex] Iwobi up there and we don’t know when we’re going to see Welbeck again. I just can’t see that happening.”
This isn’t the first time Giroud is facing criticism from an ex Gunner but the good thing about the striker is that he has been able to focus on his game despite all the criticisms.
The French man has shown he is strong mentally, which is a trait required of a big club player and hopefully his mental strength will help him improve his game on the pitch.
Giroud has scored an impressive 85 goals in 194 appearances since he joined us in 2010, which I don’t think is a bad record although he could have done better.
I’m confident he can play a key role for us as we aim at the league title this season.
