Mohammed Elneny has revealed Arsenal scouts first noticed him in the process of watching his former Basel teammate Fabian Schar.
Elneny completed a move from the Swiss club in the January transfer window and has gone on to be become a useful member of our squad but the midfielder has revealed he was not the one on our radar at first. The Egyptian says we were interested in his former teammate Schar and it was the defender who took our scouts to Basel.
I remember we were heavily linked with Schar in the summer of 2014 but for unknown reasons, a move for the defender collapsed in the last minute.
It was Elneny who later moved to the Emirates in January 2016 and the midfielder has revealed it was in the process of watching Schar that Arsenal uncovered him.
The midfielder said it was him who impressed our scouts the most each time they were present to watch Schar and Wenger decided to make a move for him when we needed a midfielder.
Elneny told Egyptian outlet DMC Sports : “All of us at Basel knew that Schar was linked with Arsenal and at every season’s end.
“We congratulated him as the move was close to completion, according to Schar himself.
“But afterwards, things changed quickly.
“My agent told me that Arsenal officials came many times to watch Schar but they were impressed every time by my performances and development and they went on to sign me instead.”
Elneny has impressed since he joined us and has showed the qualities our scouts saw in him when he was at Basel. However, the midfielder still has room for improvement and has the ability to become a better player for us in the future.
