Arsene Wenger has revealed that he tried to bring Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe to the Emirates last year.
Wenger recently spoke of his admiration for the French winger, dubbing him the next Thierry Henry but the boss has now gone a step further to confirm he was interested in signing the winger last year before he signed a new deal with Monaco.
When pressed about his interest in the French man, Wenger said, as quoted by the Daily Star:
“Look, it was at stake last season.”
“But he decided to stay where he was.”
Mbappe is already showing he has the potential to be as great as Henry. He recently became Monaco’s youngest ever goalscorer, breaking the record which was previously held by the Gunners legend and Wenger has backed him to go all the way to emulate our legend.
“Yes, he has similarities to Thierry Henry,” he added.
“First of all, he’s from the Caribbean as well and he has a huge talent.
“He plays for Monaco and Thierry Henry played for Monaco.
“When I was in Monaco I could see with Thierry Henry similarities.
“But of course after that, what makes the career is the mental aspect that Thierry had.
“This young boy has to show that he has similar qualities on the mental front that Thierry had.”
Everyone that has watched Mbappe play will know of a truth that the young man has the potential to make a mark in world football but as we all know, top players don’t rely on their talents alone to take them to the top. It is now up to Mbappe to show he is ready to work to become the best and if that’s his decision, he will be welcomed at the Emirates.
