Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has played down speculations linking him with a move to the Emirates, via the Daily Star.
Last week, reports claimed the Spaniard was one of the four names shortlisted by Arsenal to replace Arsene Wenger if the French man steps down as boss at the end of the season.
Wenger is already into the final six months of his contracts and attempts to renew his deal have been fruitless. He is insisting he wants to wait until the end of the season before making a decision on his future and this has forced Arsenal to keep an eye on potential replacements in case he steps down.
And Benitez who is on the shortlist has now played down reports that he is in line to replace Wenger, insisting he is only focused on helping Newcastle United return to the Premier League.
“I am just concentrating on the Norwich game, Benitez said when asked about reports linking him with Arsenal’s job.
“As a manager you know that people will talk.
“But the main thing for me is to be sure we are doing well and doing our jobs.”
This will come as good news to as many of us who don’t want Benitez here because of his history with Liverpool and Chelsea.
However, we may not need a replacement for Wenger as the boss himself was recently forced to deny speculations that he would be leaving the Emirates this summer.
“I appreciate you want me to rest but I’m not ready,” Wenger said.
“I focus on what is important: winning football games and getting the team to perform.”
Wenger has spent 20 years at Arsenal and has won three Premier League titles and six FA cups during this spell.
