Arsene Wenger has ruled out a move for Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford despite the 23 year old’s performance on Tuesday night.
Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0, courtesy an Alexis Sanchez’ brace but it could have been more than that had it not been the superb form of Pickford.
Arsenal had over 30 shots on the night, with Pickford making 11 saves throughout the game. It took late efforts from Sanchez to secure all three points and Wenger who was linked with a winter move for the goalie was quick to shower praises on the shot stopper after the match.
However, when asked about the possibility of making a move for the goalkeeper, Wenger ruled out a move for the England U-21 international.
“He had an exceptional night.”
“I think we had 36 shots on goal, which is the highest ever in the Premier League.
“The keeper saved 11 of them so he did extremely well,” Wenger said of Pickford’s performance.
When asked if Arsenal will be making a move for the young goalkeeper, Wenger answered:
“We have plenty of goalkeepers.
“We have Petr Cech, we have Ospina, we have Wojciech, who is on loan at Roma and has had an exceptional season.
“We also have Emi Martinez. If there is one thing we don’t have to buy it’s a goalkeeper.”
Wenger is right, we have more than enough options in the goalkeeping department and it wouldn’t make sense moving for an expensive target like Pickford when there are other positions that need attention.
The Sunderland man is a top goalkeeper and has the potential to replace Cech but he wouldn’t come cheap and with the amount of work Wenger has to do in the transfer window, Arsenal don’t have such luxury to sign an expensive goalkeeper like Pickford.
