Arsenal are interested in signing Nice midfielder Jean-Michel Seri, according to Metro.
The midfielder has been in fine form this season, helping his team to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League competition. His superb performances have led to interest from top clubs in England and Spain, who are prepared to spend big on him this summer.
Arsenal are believed to be one of those clubs after Wenger made signing a centre midfielder this summer his priority.
The Gunners were reported to have held preliminary talks with the Ivory Coast international last week ahead of a summer move.
Although talks are still at the initial stage, Nice president Jean Pierre Rivere has warned that we will have to spend big on the midfielder as he has a €40m release clause in his contract which must be activated by any potential suitor.
‘Seri has a clause worth €40m. It made everyone smile when we put this clause in two years ago,’ Jean Pierre Rivere told RMC.
‘At that price, he will be free. Without it, we do not have the intention to sell him for the moment.
‘Even if people do not take clauses seriously in France, they deserve some sort of respect. If tomorrow, a club offers €40m for Jean-Michael, he will go.’
Barcelona and Tottenham are also believed to be keen on the midfielder
