According to the Sun, Bayern Munich have shown interest in signing Arsenal target Virgil van Dijk this summer as Jerome Boateng is on Chelsea’s radar.
The reports state the Bundesliga club will rival Arsenal for Dijk who has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates this season.
The Saints are thought to want £50million for their Dutch centre-back, while the future of Claude Puel at St Mary’s has thrown the prospect of a deal into further chaos.
However, former Arsenal striker John Harston has argued Arsene Wenger sign Virgil van Dijk this summer and step it up in the transfer market by showing more ambition to challenge rivals and other European clubs for the best players even if it means breaking the bank.
Harston wants to see more of that from the club, saying: ‘I think a lot of the supporters want to see a change at Arsenal. That being at the top – the manager.
‘But what would appease the supporters is if he brought in some really big names and he makes a statement then by saying, “Well, we’ve got a strong enough squad”.
‘Say, for instance, Romelu Lukaku becomes available at Everton, £60m, whatever it is. Van Dijk for example, £50m.
‘Arsene, the fans are saying, “Please be in for these players”. Don’t be £5m out, blah, blah, blah, whatever it is.’
