The Arsenal fan base are currently happy with the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but mixed feelings have trailed the departure of Olivier Giroud. Arsene Wenger has revealed that he was left with no choice than to sell the French forward, according to report.

Giroud was heavily criticised by pundits and fans for his below-par performance but at often times, he won points for the team with his late goals. During his nearly six year spell at the Emirates, Giroud scored 104 goals and it is now said to be a decent return for a player, who came from the bench more often than not.

He is currently top choice for the Les Blues but his place in the World Cup is in doubt following the lack of game time. Alexandre Lacazette is currently top choice for Arsenal and Wenger has revealed that since Giroud cannot be no.1 striker, he had to let him leave.

He said: ‘First of all I think ideally you want him to go to a club who you do not compete with you.

‘But on the other it was linked with the Aubameyang deal. Amd he wanted to stay in London, he had a third baby recently and it was difficutl on the family side to leave London.

‘There was all this and the fact we owe Giroud a lot. His commitment his dedication and love for the club was exceptional. ‘It was difficult to turn down even if we sold to an opponent and a club we compete with.’

Antonio Conte is currently unhappy with the form of Chelsea’s record signing Alvaro Morata and had sought to sign a player that will compete with the Spaniard. Chelsea were linked with signing Andy Carroll, Petr Crouch and Edin Dzeko before the signed Giroud.’

Giroud is likely to feature for the League champions this weekend.
