Arsenal are reportedly set to make a move for Athletic Madrid defender Jose Gimenez in the summer as they stand a little chance of completing a move for their initial target De Vrij who is also being targeted by Liverpool.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger seems to have given up his desire to sign the Netherland international as the Merseyside club are reportedly close to reaching a pre-contract agreement with the player’s representative.

The Gunners are desperately in search of a no-nonsense defender to strengthen their defense line after an uninspiring display against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final which ended 3-0 in favor of the Citizens.

This season has been a season to forget for Arsene Wenger and his players as they are on the verge of losing out on next season’s Champions League qualifying ticket. They currently occupy the sixth position in the Premier League table while their rivals in the race for a top-four finish including Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool are currently in their best forms which makes it more difficult for Arsenal to finish among the top four clubs by the end of the season season.

Gimenez is currently one of the best defenders in the Spanish League due to his power, and his ability to remain calm under threat from opponent’s attackers and he could be the perfect long-term solution to Arsenal’s defensive problems ahead of next season.

According to Gol Digital, Wenger is willing to make the center-back his Prime target when the summer transfer window begins. Gimenez is set to cost the Frenchman €65million due to the release clause in his current contract with the Spanish giants.

It is yet to been if Wenger would love to spend such huge cash on the 23-year-old who have featured in just 47 league games since joining Diego Simeone’s side in 2015-16 season.
