Paul Merson explains why he has not been impressed by Alexis Sanchez’s displays for Man United so far
Paul Merson has claimed that Alexis Sanchez has been a failure at Manchester United since his transfer from Arsenal back in January.
The Chile international has been getting used to life at Old Trafford since his move to the club from Arsenal back at the turn of the year but he is yet to hit top gear for Jose Mourinho’s men.
The 29-year-old will be hoping to help Manchester United challenge for the Champions League title this season and also finish as highly as possible in the Premier League after their sixth-placed finish last term.
However, Arsenal legend Merson has not been at all impressed by what he has seen from Sanchez since the 29-year-old’s move to Manchester United from Arsenal.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star before the clash against Liverpool FC on Saturday, Merson said: “Alexis Sanchez has been a failure since his big move to Manchester United.
“They must have thought they were getting the missing piece of the puzzle, a player who could bridge the gap to neighbours City.
“After all, City boss Pep Guardiola wanted him too and United presented it as a big coup when they won the race to sign him. But it hasn’t worked out that way.
“I’ve always said I wasn’t his biggest fan. He works his socks off but gives the ball away more than any other player.”
Sanchez will be hoping to help Manchester United to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League when the Red Devils take on Sevilla on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils played out a goalless draw with the Spanish side in the first leg in Spain last month.
Manchester United are aiming to at least finish in the top four this season after they ended up in sixth place last term.
