The BBC are reporting Arsenal are in advance position in completing their first summer signing despite not getting a replacement for Arsene Wenger who has left the Emirate Stadium after 22 years in charge.
The report claims the Gunners are in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund to sign Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The centre-half could become the Gunners’ first signing of the summer transfer window.
Defence is an area the club are prioritising strengthening following a poor season which saw them finish sixth.
And while Arsene Wenger’s successor is yet to be announced, it appears transfer activity is well underway.
Arsenal’s head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi are leading an overhaul of the squad.
And with the Gunners eyeing at least one central defender this summer, Sokratis may be the first through the door.
According to the London Evening Standard, Arsenal are in talks to make the 29-year-old their first signing after Wenger’s departure.
It would reunite the Dortmund man with former team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at the Emirates too.
Sokratis is also said to be available for just £15m, having failed to agree terms over a new contract at the Westfalenstadion.
But while the Greece international appears poised to head to north London, a switch won’t be completed just yet.
