Goonersden brings you news from top football news sites from the likes of BBC, ESPN, SkySport, Daily Mail, Daily Star and Metro… We also Analyse football, player, transfer and predict Arsenal starting line-up.
Mikel Arteta wants the power to veto any Arsenal transfers, if he’s going to take over the club as manager this summer, replacing the departing Arsene Wenger.
The Daily Mail write that Arteta wants ‘full control’ over transfers, before going on to say he just wants a strong voice in the process and the power to veto any new signings. That doesn’t exactly sound like ‘full control’ to me, but we’ll brush over that.
The point is that the rumoured new boss wants to be able to turn down signings that the current transfer team decide on.
Raul Sanllehi – head of football relations, Sven Mislintat – head of recruitment, and Huss Fahmy – contract negotiator, are currently working together on the process, along with Ivan Gazidis of course.
Even though all four have plenty of experience in their fields, they still don’t have to pick the team on matchday. You can understand why the guy who does have to pick it wants a say in who Arsenal sign.
It shouldn’t be a big obstacle to his appointment. Arsenal clearly want to move away from the model under Wenger where the Frenchman had a majority say in the process, but that presumably doesn’t mean they want to exclude the head coach entirely.
We’ll hopefully see what they decide next week though.
