Arsenal have been handed a boost in their pursuit of German attacker
Julian Draxler. The Gunners failed with a winter bid for him but going by

Here is what Schalke’s chairman Clemens Tonnies, Schalke had to say,
“It pleases me when FC Bayern or foreign clubs are interested in our
players”, he told the German daily TZ.
“But that doesn’t mean that they will move there. It rather means that we
are doing a great job and that we have a good youth department.”
“I’ve already said it quite often: Players of Julian’s quality will of
course eventually look elsewhere”
“What’s important to me is that the transfer benefits the club, too.”
“Even though it is a shame to see players like [Manuel] Neuer or maybe
sometime in the future Draxler go: One should not pocket the money and
then moan about it afterwards.”
That is certainly good news as it seems Schalke might love the player but
it looks like they love the money more. They were also reportedly
unwilling to sell Neuer until Bayern offered what they couldn’t turn down.
The same might just happen to Draxler but unlike Neuer, the attacker has a
buyout clause and should any club offer it, he could be on the move.
Having sorted the issue of whether or not he will be available for
transfer in the summer, the next issue will be where he would be heading?
Arsenal have been linked with a move for him, so as German giants Bayern
Munich. The Bavarians have money to spend and a huge attraction for any
German player but Schalke boss has ruled out a move to their domestic
rivals, suggesting instead that only a move abroad would appeal to them
and probably him too.
“If another club comes in for him, then we cannot block them. That would
be unfair,” Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies told Sport Bild magazine.
“I don’t think he wants to join Bayern Munich, though.”
“We know we’re not going to be able to keep Julian at Schalke forever,” he
“It would do Draxler good to spend another year or two with us.”
With that statement, seems Arsenal now have a huge edge in the race for
him. Draxler would likely want to take the big leap to a bigger club in
the summer and with Bayern looking a remote destination, Arsenal are huge
favourites after all, Draxler had previously expressed an interest in a
move to Arsenal.
With that, the ball is firmly in Arsenal’s court. Wenger should trigger
his release clause and bring him to the Emirates in the summer.
