Napoli have sounded out Arsenal about signing out-of-favour defender Thomas Vermaelen according to the Mirror.
The 28-year-old’s contract expires at the end of next season and despite his lack of playing time this term, Arsene Wenger still wants to offer him a new deal.
Rafa Benitez has seen Napoli’s title charge in Serie A derailed by defensive deficiencies, and has earmarked Vermaelen as the person to reinforce their backline.
But Wenger is a firm admirer of the Belgian, who he signed from Dutch giants Ajax for £10million in 2009, and wants to retain his services.
However, With the gunners unsettled center back Thomas Vermaelen seeking a move away from the Emirates due to lack of first team action, Wenger has been on the lookout for a suitable replacement and it seems once again the Frenchman has looked to the Bundesliga for another German to fill in the center back for Arsenal increasing the number of Germans currently at the Emirates.
