Arsenal are set to face stiff competition in their bid to land prolific “Goal Machine” Jackson Martinez as Italian giants AS Roma join English trio in the pursuit of the Colombian.
It has been reported that the agent of Porto striker has talked up the prospect of the striker moving to AS Roma. Despite Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United’s continued Interest in the star.
If the reports are true, it will definitely be bad news for the English trio who were hitherto individually thought to be the front runners for the signature of the high rated Colombian.
Manchester United will not be in the Champions league next season and on the back of a season that has gone awfully wrong for the Red Devils, Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor is looking to re-jig the squad and has identified Jackson Martinez as the striker to replace now injury-prone former Arsenal captain and crowd favourite, Robin van Persie.
Roma along with Premier League giants Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are scouting the 27 year old Colombian international.
The 6ft 1in striker, who has massively impressed in the Peninsula since being bought from his native side, Chiapas FC as a replacement for compatriot Radamel Falcao has been watched on several occasions by the former Everton manager and his team of scout. He was also present in the weekend’s 3-1 defeat of Porto by league leaders Benfica to see his top target in action.
Arsenals Interest in the striker was recently boosted after the player himself declared his availability by insisting that he is yet to renew his contract with current club Porto and that also many things could happen after the World cup in June.
In a recent interview with Columbian Radio, Antena2, the FC Porto striker said:
“I’ve not renewed with the club. It’s something that we have been discussing during the season.”
“As for my departure, I have a contract with FC Porto. After the World Cup, many things can happen but I am focused on continuing to do an excellent job for Porto and the rest will come with time.”
Arsenal are looking to sign a world-class striker at the end of the season after the Arsenal board are allegedly willing to hand out a massive £100 Million transfer kitty to our dear Arsene Wenger. So it is likely that Arsenal would put up a decent fight to bring in the lethal striker.
However, Chelsea on the other hand are said to have problems with funds to be spent in the summer and are looking to sell off some players in other to raise funds for their summer purchases.
Agent Guglielmo Lara told tuttomercatoweb : “Is the price still the same? It’s difficult to say now, as it depends on the offer and the demand, while at this moment Porto have other things to think about,”.
“Roma are a great club, without doubt, but Porto haven’t started any talks for a sale at this moment.
“The situation is critical, as Porto are concentrated only on this final stage of the season. This other issue will be
evaluated later on.”
Martinez has scored 44 goals in 57 appearances so far for Porto since his joinig in 2012. And the player who has never hidden his desire to play for an EPL team may cost as much as €40 Million, which is his release clause.
Should Arsenal Engage in a battle for the signature of this “goal machine” in the coming summer?
Or should we simply bow-out and seek options elsewhere?
