Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Benfica forward Rodrigo Moreno. with the player himself confirming his availability in the summer, according to talkSPORT Radio.
Rodrigo, who has attracted the attention of top European sides including Arsenal and Liverpool, has scored 11 times this season to help his team to the top of the Portuguese league.
The Spanish Under-23 International, born in Brazil- moved to Spain in his early teens joining Real Madrid C-team in 2009 to complete his development before quickly moving up the ranks to the B-team in the same year.
Rodrigo signed a five-year contract with Benfica in the summer of 2010 for approximately €6million with Real Madrid including an option to re-buy the player for €12 million during the next two seasons; however, after Fábio Coentrão’s transfer to the Spanish club, the teams agreed to cancel the buyback clause.
The 5ft 11in striker who has made a total of 65 appearances for Benfica since joining them in 2010 scoring 26 times was in action against English side Tottenham Hotspurs in thier EUROPA League clash last month. And was earlier rumoured to be on Arsenal’s wanted lists during the January transfer window.
His Portuguese club, Benfica sold his economic rights to a private investment company in January according to talkSPORT Radio; and now is not certain where his future lies next season as reports continue to link him with a move to the English Premier League. The 23 year old says he is not sure if he will remain in his Portuguese club this summer; which could spark a scramble for his signature.
“I do not know what will happen next year. I really like Benfica. Of course there is interest in playing in other leagues, but playing at Benfica, the club that I like, would not be too bad either,” Rodrigo was quoted to have said on ESPN Brazil.
Young, quick, and very skilful; the 23 year old Benfica forward is one of the best attacking players in the Portuguese league. His ability to dribble past defenders at will is what makes him a great asset to his club; and no wonder Benfica are currently topping the league.
The Player is rated at €29million and his club will have a lot to do if they want to keep him as it will be difficult to deal with various rumours linking him to the big clubs in Europe.
Arsenal are on the look-out for a striker, and in my opinion; Rodrigo will bring with him the pace and power of the Portuguese league and will do well in getting the goals in.
Also having age on his side being only 23, the Spanish forward will have a long way to go, further developing and eventually becoming an Arsenal fan favorite in the future Should Wenger snap him up in the summer.
