Following the start of the biggest football event in the world; the World Cup, taking place in Brazil, A lot of expectations have been shifted on various Arsenal stars currently featuring at the competition as well as the loads of players being linked with a move to the Emirates.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell, who scored in the 3-1 win over Uruguay yesterday, will feature in his plans next season.
The Costa Rican forward who signed a five-year deal with Arsenal from Deportivo Saprissa in 2011 after rejecting offers from Sevilla and Fiorentina failed to obtain a work permit to enable him to play in England and thus faced three loans spells, to Lorient in 2011, Real Beits in 2012, and Olympiakos last season. He obtained a work permit to enable him to play in England last year.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who can also operate as a striker, will return to Arsenal at the end of the season and is desperate for a chance to prove he is ready for the first team.
The forward who towards the end of last season had called out on Arsenal to give him the opportunity following his return to the Emirates from a series of loan spell.
He said: “I’ve always been ready, I need them to give me the opportunity, which is what I’m working towards”.
“I think I’ve matured a lot, personally and as a player,” Campbell explained. “I’m no longer the same Campbell, but I feel very happy with my growth,” added Campbell.
The player has certainly lived up to this claim in his series of loan spells and has further impressed Wenger in his World cup debut last weekend against Uruguay where he scored a beauty of a goal and assisted another with a brilliant defence-splitting pass for Costa Rica’s third.
Following his impressive performance, Wenger said:
“He will definitely come back to us for pre-season,” Wenger who is over in Brazil on commentary duty for France television, said. “He is maturing well.”
In further confirmation of Arsenal’s delight in their young forward, the club’s official twitter account wasted no time in proving they were behind their young star, compiling three tweets in support of his performance.
