Just last season Arsenal were short upfront relying solely on Olivier Giroud as he was the only out-and-out striker Arsene Wenger trusted, coupled with injuries to makeshift strikers – Theo Walcott and Lukas Podolski. The lone French forward was subsequently overplayed which resulted to fatigue and the eventual goal drought.
Wenger not wanting a repeat of the drama in the just concluded 2013/2014 English Premier League season which saw rivals outscore the Gunners with some ‘tennis-like’ score-lines has drawn up a wish-list of strikers with reports claiming Wilfried Bony to be one of the top targets.
The Ivorian who plays for Swansea City with a release clause of about £19 million has made it clear that he would like to play in the Champions League which currently is a high mountain for the Welsh club to climb and a treat they can’t offer to the striker at the moment.
Although the 25-year-old has just one Premier League season under his belt, he has however scored a total of 25 goals in all competition for the Swans which earned him accolades from all corners with our very own legend- Thierry Henry saying this about him:
“He didn’t start so well in the Premier League but then we found out what he is all about,[He has] greater awareness, finish he can finish with his left, right foot and header.”
“He’s strong, good in one-on-one situations, has pace – he [puts himself] about [in the right positions]. If you cross, he’ll be there; he has great movement.”
Arsenal needs a proven EPL scorer who has adapted to the physicality and speed of the league and could bang those goals, which i believe Bony ticks all those boxes. If he could score 25 goals last season with the service he got at Swansea city, then i think with the arsenal midfield and Mesut Özil the assist king behind him that he would help fire arsenal to a trophy-laden campaign next season.
