Wenger wants to make Real Madrid midfielder – Sami Khedira his second marquee signing of the summer after £35 million Sanchez’s arrival from Barcelona on Thursday. Sanchez’s signing – the second most expensive in the club’s history – is a big statement of intent from the Gunners boss. And Wenger, who has always left his transfer dealings until the last minute in recent years, was keen to get Sanchez in the bag early in this window to help his sales pitch.
Although Khedira’s current £150,000-a-week wage demands, which would make him Arsenal’s highest-paid player, are proving to be a stumbling block. But Wenger believes he can persuade Khedira to lower what he is asking for and swap the Bernabeu for the Emirates. And he hopes adding a world class star like Sanchez to his squad will be key to making Arsenal even more attractive to Khedira.
The 27-year-old is understood to have discussed life at Arsenal with Gunners stars and Germany pals Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski during the World Cup. However, Signing Khedira would take another big chunk out of Wenger’s transfer budget with £11m Mathieu Debuchy on the way and a new no2 goalkeeper also on his summer shopping list.
Khedira has rejected a new contract at Real and told the club he wants to move on – and Real, according to sources in Spain, will accept the right bid for the 27-year-old.
Khedira only has 12 months left on his Madrid contract but he is still expected to cost more than £20 million. However, recent reports suggests Arsenal have made a £20 million opening offer for Khedira.
Now Chelsea manager; Jose Mourinho who knows the midfielder well from his spell in charge at the Bernabeu wants to bring him to England. Leaving Wenger on the hot-seat as he now faces a major battle to get his man even though Wenger has already had talks with Real over Khedira.
Mourinho wants another creative player after losing Frank Lampard this summer, even though he has already signed Cesc Fabrgas from Barcelona. Chelsea are willing to top Arsenal’s opening offer and a bidding war is now likely to ensue.
For Wenger, Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin are two cheaper central midfield options if a deal for Khedira proves to be too pricey.
While Mourinho is also interested in Juventus’ French World Cup midfielder Paul Pogba, who was in London this week, but Khedira would be a cheaper option, with the Italians wanting £60m for Pogba.
