Arsène Wenger is preparing to follow up the signing of Alexis Sanchez with more new signings and has made enquiries over this past week on Germany internationals Sami Khedira and Lars Bender.
The possible addition of Khedira And/or Bender to the squad will most excite Arsenal fans and serve as further evidence, following the acquisitions of Sanchez and Mesut Ozil over the past year, that Wenger is again able to compete for the world’s best players.
Khedira has been one of the best midfielders at the World Cup and, although he has only got one year left on his contract at Real Madrid, the Champions League winners would still demand in excess of £20 million.
Madrid were said to have held talks with the German midfielder over a potential contract extension but the report that followed such discussion revealed that Khidera have put such plans on hold with the option of him joining fellow German teammates Per Mertesacker and Ozil at the Emirates next summer.
There had been reports claiming that a £24 million bid has already gone in and now Spanish reports say the two clubs are in advanced talks over a possible transfer.
The news comes after talkSPORT broadcaster Stan Collymore tweeted that he’d been told of the negotiations, before suggesting that a deal was close.
However, any transfer will depend on whether Arsenal can match his £150,000-a-week wage demands, which have previously put other clubs off trying to sign him.
Wenger is still also, a big admirer of Bender, who is younger and likely to be cheaper than Khedira. Bender was in Joachim Low’s provisional 30-man Germany World Cup squad but was forced to withdraw following a thigh injury. The Frenchman will be looking to force open – the hands of his club to release Bender after having a £19 million bid rejected last summer for the player.
As it stands, reports are suggesting that ‘cheeky’ Wenger maybe interested in landing both player this summer in other to send a strong statement to fellow EPL contenders about his title intent in the coming season. With the Frenchman coming on the back of a ‘fat transfer kitty’ following the recent financial turn-around that hit the club after many years of Emirates stadium club-debt.
