You all know Arsenal’s problem, don’t you? Our malady in the recent past seasons has always been the lack of squad depth; its true we have a fantastic starting line-up but what differentiates a strong team from a weak one is the quality of players on the bench; and that has always been Arsenal’s problem for like 7 seasons now.
Just last season, we were topping the league and went into the 2nd half of the season blowing opponents away with some wonderful displays and pass combinations, winning 3 games with just a draw against Southampton in January.
Then injuries crept in and the doctors became busy while the team suffered on the pitch against title rivals, who made mincemeat of our midfield.
That midfield still remains the same, barring the return of Abou Diaby – who is more like a doctor to me now, since the Frenchman has spent more time in the treatment room than on the pitch over the last 2 season.
But it seems Wenger doesn’t want a repeat of the 2013/2014 season’s blip and is now making conscious efforts to bring one more defensive midfield. Reports reaching us has it that Wenger is after Sporting CP’s defensive midfielder – William Carvalho, and wouldn’t hear of any other player in that position.
Carvalho just made his senior team debut for Portuguese club – Sporting CP in the 2013/2014 season, where he made 29 league appearances scoring 4 goals and bossing the midfield while impressing scouts and pundits with his tenacity and speed.
The Portuguese international has a knack for being at the right place at the right time, disrupting the opponents rhythm and intercepting passes.
At such a young age, he has the physical presence in the midfield and the experience way beyond his peers. And according to Squawka, he had 90% passing accuracy in the 2014 Fifa World Cup, where he made 2 appearances. This impressive stat is due to his cautious approach to the game; as he loves playing short passes to the nearest teammate and not a type who would play long forward balls into the oppositions half or stray further up the pitch exposing his defence to counter-attacks.
Although reports coming out of Portugal now are claiming that Arsenal have tabled a €30million (£24m) bid for the player but it is believed that his club are holding out for an offer closer to the €45m release clause he has in his current contract.
I believe he could be the true defensive midfielder the Arsenal fans have been craving for and would help the club push for the English Premier League title as well as other major title this coming season.
