Arsenal in the summer transfer window are seriously looking to secure all positions that will be looking short in terms of dept and direct replacement should injury befall a first team player.
Now reports have emerged claiming that Arsenal have opened talks with Catania for young fullback Gino Peruzzi.
The Argentine moved to Catania from Velez Sarsfield for £2.5m last summer but was unable to help the Sicilians avoid relegation.
According to the reports coming out of Italy the 22-year-old Argentine is wanted by manager Arsene Wenger as cover for new boy Mathieu Debuchy in the coming season.
With Mathieu Debuchy replacing Bacary Sagna as the club’s first-choice for a fee in the region of £12 million, there is still a need for backup with Carl Jenkinson set for a loan move away from the Emirates Stadium with West Ham United one of the several clubs showing an interest in the player. And with Atletico Madrid touting alternative target Javi Manquillo around to other clubs, reports in Italy have linked Arsenal to Peruzzi.
Peruzzi, aside being an excellent marksman also boasts the reading of the game and positional sense to compensate for his lack of acceleration. While equally capable of playing on the right of the midfield, it is his feisty tackling and breaking up of attacks that remain his strengths and thus his best role is as in defence or as a wing-back.
However, his discipline is something that can be worked on – even by his own admission – as he last year picked up eight yellow cards and one red in just 20 Serie A starts. but his intelligent defensive play, good positioning and sheer grit often makes up for this flaw of his.
