Last week, Arsenal traveled to New York to take on Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bull side in a friendly match in which the Gunners lost.
Despite the loss, the Gunners did put up a good show judging by the number and quality of players that made the trip to New York for the friendly match.
And now the Gunners real pre-season preparation starts and it looks as though there is going to be a shortage of stars at Wenger proposed training camp and team harmony retreat in Austria.
Wenger bemoaned the post World Cup years. Blaming them for the lack of pre-season time his team will get as the Gunners will be expected to return to base in time for the Emirates Cup set to kick off this weekend.
He admitted: “The real work starts now and then the Emirates Cup this weekend. The problem is our pre-season will be very short; these post World Cup years are a nightmare for us because we have no preparation.”
But one part about the Arsenal boss’s comments that would bother most Arsenal fans is the fact that new signing Alexis Sanchez will miss out on the Gunners trip to Austria with his teammates due to a lack of visa which the Chilean will go pick up in Paris and then proceed to London on Tuesday where he will train alone.
“I don’t think Sanchez will come to Austria because he has to go to Paris to get a visa, so he will only go to London Colney on Tuesday and we come back on Thursday, so he will work in London.”
This would seem a huge blow to many of us Arsenal fans as we would love to see the star signing getting mixed with the rest of the team on time before the Emirates Cup begins.
Wenger also gave some other not not so good news. Commenting on other players who also didn’t make the trip to New York Wenger said:
“I wanted Oxlade-Chamberlain to have a good basic work because he lacked that a little bit last season.
“We haven’t done a lot of training in the last two days so I wanted him to have a good basic work and stay with the fitness coaches.
“Sanogo didn’t come because he had a little thigh problem and we didn’t want to take a gamble.”
However, Two players also ready to meet their new team-mates are Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, who has completed his £3.2m move from Nice, and £16m Southampton wonderkid Calum Chambers. who where officially unveiled by Arsenal’s official website today.
