No doubt the new season for Arsene Wenger and his men promises a type filled with massive expectations following the seriousness shown by Arsenal in the transfer window so far.
Arsenal look set to complete the surprising capture of Southampton’s 19-year-old star Calum Chambers despite the right-back having only made his Premier League debut August last year.
Arsenal’s new target Chambers is set to complete his move to the Emirates within the next 24 hours after undergoing a successful medical last week Friday.
Although Mathieu Debuchy is likely to hold down a first-team birth in the short-term but the 19-year-old will fancy his chances of deposing the Frenchman in the near future.
Chamber who is highly rated by Wenger is expected to complete his £12m switch from Southampton in time to fly out with the Gunners to Austria for a four-day pre-season training. The fee for the 19-year-old, who made 23 appearances, eighteen of them top flight starts 18 Premier League games, could rise to £16m, which Wenger admits is high.
Wenger said he can understand the shock at such a fee for the inexperienced youngster, but he likes the 19-year-old’s versatility.
He added: “He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in this three positions.
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future.”
