Arsenal over the weekend took part in the just concluded Emirates cup and although the Gunners fell out of the competition through a defeat to Monaco, the outing still was regarded by Arsenal manager – Arsene Wenger as a chance to see his new recruits in action ahead of the coming season.
The Arsenal boss when asked about the performance of newly recruited 19-year-old – Calum Chambers had nice words for the young talent but went on suggesting further roles in which the talented youngster could fill in for.
He Told Arsenal official website “He’s one of the players over the two games who played very well.”
“He’s 19 years old and he came here without talking, he plays two good games and is not phased by the quality of the games and the opponents at his first time at the Emirates at 19.”
“He’s one of the satisfactions of the weekend.”
It is no news that the Gunners have been in the transfer market in search of a natural defensive midfielder to man the Arsenal midfield when every other attackers spring forward.
And although Arsenal have been linked with moves for Real’s Sami Khedira, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin, William Carvalho and a host of other targets to fill in that position, Wenger has hinted that he could as well deploy the England star in that position as he believes the youngster is a “natural” in such position with Wenger citing several of his qualities as those that suit such role.
“He can play as well central midfield because he’s got good technique, good mobility and is a great distance runner. At the moment it’s where I can have a look at him. But I think he can also play central midfield.”
Wenger also talked about the player’s progress as he revealed his surprise when the player broke into the Saints first team as a right-back after tracing his roots as a central defensive midfielder prior to his first team break out.
“Yes [I was surprised[ because he was educated as a centre defensive midfielder.”
“Then he played in the under-19 with England, he played central defender, he played for Southampton right back.”
“I saw him first time against us as a right back and I liked him. At the end of the season he didn’t play too much at Southampton. But I made my mind up to buy him after I saw him against us.”
Arsenal take on Manchester City this weekend for the Community Shield cup and although Wenger still have at his disposal Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta to fill in the defensive position, It wont come as a surprise to many if the 19-year-old is given the chance and deployed as a holding midfielder as the Gunners may as well have within their possession what they have been seriously searching for in the summer transfer window.
