When Arsene Wenger made Alexis Sanchez his first signing of the summer, football pundits saw the move to mean Arsenal want to be a strong contenders for the English Premier League title this season.
Signings made by any football club is always for two reasons i.e. for strengthening the team and for replacing aging players or players leaving the club.
Following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, Wenger has been on the hunt for a new centre back to bolster his defending options. And although Calum Chambers may have arrived from Southampton, with the 19-year-old putting in a couple of fine displays so far against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield, Crystal Palace in the League opener and Besiktas in the Champions league qualifiers but Arsene Wenger seems determined to strengthen his back position.
Targeted is Olympiacos defender – Kostas Manolas. He is 23-year-old, a centre-back and has a good height of 6ft 2ins.
He is also coming on the back of a Champions league experience with Olympiakos. his performances for Greece during the World cup were promising. He has a considerably good pace for a tall guy.
Manolas is an aggressive, hard working defender with an eye for goal, he netted 2 out of 7 Champions League appearances during last year’s campaign. Manolas is very likely to be signed as he had reportedly already done his medicals at the Emirates with a slight disagreement in his terms said to be delaying his move to Arsenal.
Manolas could also be joined by Manchester City’s 21 year old Matija Nastasic who has been deemed surplus to requirements at City by manager – Manuel Pellegrini.
Another region that needs strengthening is the defensive midfield position. As the circumstances around the substitution of Mikel Arteta from the Champions’ league match yesterday is not known yet, and the Sami Khedira deal is dragging for too long. Wenger seems to be looking for other options in the middle of the pack for the Gunners.
One of the players Arsene Wenger is looking at is Newcastle’s Cheik Tiote, the 28 year old player is valued at just £8 million which represent a cheaper option to Sami Khedira. If this deal happens the Ivorian International will be the second player to make a move to the Emirates this Summer with right-back Mathieu Debuchy switching to the Emirates earlier in the transfer window.
Another option for the defensive midfield position is William Carvalho, he is reportedly valued at £35 million. At 22, Carvalho has 4 player of the month award this past season. Standing over 6ft, the defensive midfielder would be a distinguished physical presence in Arsenal’s midfield infrastructure.
Some say he is the next Patrick Viera, but the talented midfielder’s style of play can be compared to Song’s and Makalele’s. The combination of Carvalho and Ramsey in Arsenal’s midfield will be a joy to behold.
The forward position also needs strengthening as the few first matches of the season saw both Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo in the pole position for the team performing a bit below par. A player fervently linked to arsenal is PSG’s Edison Cavani. According to reports Arsenal will need to spend £51 million in order to land Cavani this summer.
