Arsenal are obviously serious about their approach to the new season. The signings began with the £35 million signing of Alexis Sanchez followed by £17 million Calum Chambers, £12 million Mathieu Debuchy and £3 million David Ospina respectively. The signings so far were aimed at strengthening and fortifying the team with the likes of Bacary Sagna and Lukasz Fanbiaski leaving the club for Manchester City and Swansea City respectively.
There are reports however, that Arsenal is on the verge of making the Chilean forward Eduardo Vargas their 5th signing of the summer. Reports coming out of Italy indicate that the player is not wanted by Napoli and that Arsenal has offered him an exit route.
The forward have spent two seasons on loan, firstly at Gremio and then at Valencia. During the time which he scored 16 league goals, in 41 appearances. But the Napoli Manager, Rafa Benitez has ostensibly been unimpressed with Vargas in pre-season and he is looking to offload him this summer.
And with the player reportedly set to have medicals in the next few days, Arsenal look like they have beaten both Valencia and Queen Park Rangers to the signing of a player who made a positive impression in the 2014 World cup for Chile.
The move will see Vargas link up with fellow Chilean International teammate, Alexis Sanchez, which may have been the catalyst in his choice of joining the Gunners.
Vargas can play as both a winger and a striker and will give the Arsenal Gunners more pace in their attacking line-up that already has Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The link-up play between Alexis Sanchez and Vargas, during the just concluded FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil, in which they provided an enviable partnership for the Chilean National team will definitely make the attack of Arsenal more potent. More importantly the 24 year old would offer serious competition to Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo up top, two players that Arsene Wenger may not want to rely on all season long.
The price mentioned for the, quick and versatile, player who only has a year on his contract is only £10 million, a price very affordable for the London Gunners, especially as they just added £15 million in their purse from the Sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.
It might be worth noting that majority of forwards linked to Arsenal are comfortable on the right side of attack which may indicate Arsenal are strengthening in that position allowing them to move Theo Walcott in the middle more often should they need to.
