Arsenal’s pursuit of a 5th summer signing this transfer window has taken another twist. And with just 10 days to go till the transfer window is shut, Arsenal have now emerged second favourites to Italian giants to landing Premier League defender Matija Nastasic from League champions Manchester City.
Arsenal have been linked to sign Manchester City’s defender Matija Nastasic before the close of the summer transfer window. All efforts seems to have been going well in our chase for the defender until recent reports according to “the Express” are claiming that the Gunners are now second favourites to Juventus who have shown fresh but increased interest in the player.
The Serbian international, who left Italian side Fiorentina, in order to join City back in 2012, has struggled to break into the first-team under both Roberto Mancini and now Manuel Pellegrini, despite him having a great reputation as one of the top young defenders.
Nastasic has only managed to make 34 first-team appearances in his two seasons at the Etihad Stadium, being kept out of the side by the likes of; Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott and Martin Demichelis. After only making 20 appearances last season under Pellegrini, Nastasic has now been told by the manager that he can find a new club and move on this Summer in order to resurrect his career.
Premier League side Arsenal have also shown interest in the centre-back, as they look to replace Thomas Vermaelen, who left the club earlier this month in order to join Spanish giants – Barcelona in a fee believed to be in the region of £15 million.
However, according to reports, Arsenal are closing in on signing Olympiakos defender; Kostas Manolas, in a £6million deal, which would clear the way for Juventus to sign Nastasic from City.
It’s being reported that City would want around £12 million for their defender, which is roughly what they signed him for back in 2012, and Wenger is keen to sign a cheaper alternative, with Manolas costing half of what the Premier League defender cost.
It can be argued that Nastasic has featured in the English Premier league and the Champions league for City, hence he will be a better replacement for Thomas Vermaelen, but Kostas Manolas has a pedigree of his own. He has a strong tall presence at the back, he is quick and can score goals, as he proved during last year’s Champions League where he scored two goals in seven games.
Also the Greek International featured prominently in the just concluded FIFA 2014 World cup for Greece, hence his experience cannot be denied.
Arsene Wenger may still have it mind to go for Nastasic because of the large depth of squad that the English premier league requires, but with the exploits of Calum Chambers, who can play in the central defence as well as at the right back, and with the likes of young players like Rabiot coming in, i have a strong feeling that he will pass on the deal.
We wait till the end of August, to see what kind of offer Matija Nastasic gets. The Summer transfer window closes in 10 days!!.
