Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger says he wants a new defensive midfielder, after Arsenal Captain, Mikel Arteta’s injury, in the last ten days of the transfer window.
Mikel Arteta was ruled out on Wednesday evening for around three weeks, with an ankle injury.
With Aaron Ramsey suspended for what is effectively a £25 million Champions’ League play-off next Wednesday against Besiktas. The loss of Mikel Arteta and Aaron means that Arsene Wenger will be without his two fist choice central midfielders.
When Arsene was asked this morning if he could sign a new midfielder before the end of summer transfer window, he replied: ”We are not against that, no.”
He continued: “We are like you, we listen to the names, and sometimes I look who we buy in the media but at the moment as I told you we are not in an emergency case. We have the players we want but we are open as well to any opportunity until the end of the transfer window, who can strengthen our defensive department in quality and number”.
He also said, “I can’t tell you how likely I am, I just said to you I am open to doing it. It has to be linked with the needed quality. I tell you something, if you ask today 20 top clubs in the world what they look for, they all look for the same positions. That means it is not necessarily out there.”
Arteta left Istanbul in a protective boot after being forced off in the 50th minute after what Wenger called a “Very Bad” tackle by Demba Ba. The first prognosis on Wednesday was that Arteta will be out for around three weeks and possibly longer. More details will be made later on the situation of Arteta’s injury.
Wenger had already been giving serious thought to buying a new central defender this summer transfer window and although Arteta’s injury seems to be short-termed, the situation is still likely to push Wenger into action in the coming days.
Arsenal have relied on Arteta very heavily in the past three seasons, but at his age now (32 years) and with only one year left on his contract, there is a great need for a new defensive midfielder in Arsenal. The other main options in the defensive midfield position are Mathieu Flamini, who is more combative and less reliable in his passing, and Calum Chambers, who has never previously played in that position for Arsenal since joining the club several weeks ago.
There has been interest from Arsenal in Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, Williams Carvalho of Sporting Lisbon, Lars Bender of Bayern Leverkusen, Cheick Tiote of New castle and Morgan Schneiderlin of Southampton. A very cheap and dependable option is Cheick Tiote as he is available for only £8 million.
But feelers we are getting is that Sami Khedira can be available as low as £12 million , as he refused to sign another contract at Real Madrid and he refuse to respond when asked if he wants to stay.
